Beethoven va trencar motlles en molts aspectes de la música: en la instrumentació, en la durada, en l’estructura, en la profunditat emocional del seu discurs… També ho va fer amb la composició d’una obra única en el repertori internacional: un concert per a tres solistes d’unes dimensions simfòniques impensables en aquella època. El pianista de l’estrena va ser el seu deixeble de més alt llinatge, l’arxiduc Rodolf, fill de l’emperador. L’èxit va ser immediat gràcies a l’elegància dels seus temes, al perfecte diàleg entre solistes i orquestra i també a la insòlita rellevància que va donar al violoncel.
La primera simfonia de Txaikovski és una petita joia que li va servir, al compositor, per presentar-se als vint-i-cinc anys com a professor del Conservatori de Moscou. Carregada de malenconia, la simfonia s’inspira en l’ambient gèlid que respirava en els seus viatges entre Moscou i Sant Petersburg. Hi ha escenes descriptives –amb flocs de neu i boira–, però tampoc hi falten els motius heroics i enèrgics propis del Txaikovski més espectacular.
